The Street Walker of Zurich, Switzerland or "Suzanne Walking in Leather Skirt" by Julian Opie
A lady strolls by traffic, parading her long legs and slim physique for tram stop passersby in Downtown Zurich. ;) * Discovered that my "street walker" of Zurich is actually an art piece titled "Suzanne Walking in Leather Skirt" when I visited and walked through the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston the summer of 2009. The artist is Brit Julian Opie. The work is from 2006. The last time I saw my lady was the summer of 2007 in Zurich. She gets around ... I guess, I do too.... :) Info on Opie: www.julianopie.com http

(Taos) Hum, frequency analysis, Brummton Phänomen, Zurich-Switzerland
(Taos) Hum, frequency analysis, Brummton Phänomen, Zurich-Switzerland
Please read this text before playing or commenting. This is a video with the original sound of the recordings from 22. Jan. 2009, 01:24am CET/CEWT. I call it Taos Hum because it's a common name for it and most people know what it is. You need high quality headphones or a qualitative sub woofer system to hear the hum. With cheap headphones or PC sub-woofer systems it may not be audible. ------- This is the raw record. It is not edited expect for the DC bias correction. The cable and the microphone were not shielded. The frequencies between 1 and 20Hz are very interesting to me. The mic I used is capable of registering air pressure changes in the range of several seconds. The corner frequency of the amp was set at about 8Hz. So at 0.8Hz I still had -40 to -20dB of signal, means I could have registered pressure changes caused by winds. But, I believe these signals were not acoustical signals but instead electric or electromagnetic. That also would explain why the amplitude is 1-2 orders (20-40dB) higher than the average (it should be the opposite). ------- 2012-Jan-21 I read some interesting text about ground currents caused by power lines. See: www.vlf.it [...] In addition, the 50 Hz hum exists almost everywhere: not only in houses, but also out in nature. This is because the currents going back from the consumer loads to the power stations are partly using the natural ground as a conductor. Besides, all those high-voltage power lines crossing fields and forests are ...

Public Transportation (Zurich, Switzerland)
Public Transportation (Zurich, Switzerland)
Learn how to ride common form of public transport in Zurich. (Zurich, Switzerland) It is easy to navigate around Zurich. You can use the city's extensive tram and bus network, hop on a lake steamer, ride a taxi or rent a bike. The easiest way to get to almost any location in the city is to ride a tram. Use this map at the tram stop to find out your route. Today, I will be going from Central to Kunstouse. Before buying a ticket at one of the machines, decide what kind of ticket you need and then press the appropriate button. If you plan on riding more than twice, I highly recommend the day pass. After you press the button, the ticket price will be displayed on the screen. When paying, make sure to have plenty of coins, as most of the machines do not accept bills. This is where the ticket comes out. Now you are ready to get on the tram. This plate shows you what trams stop here. You can check out the timings on this departure table. Our tram to Kunstouse leaves in three minutes. Looks like that is our tram. You can see the route by looking at the color and number. The tram halts at every stop. Make sure to press the button or the door would not open. The trams can take you practically everywhere in Zurich. On 68 Niederdorfstrasse in the "Dörfli" [village] a new, informal bar for the young and those who preserved their youth has been opened. It's where you meet for a quick snack or a drink, or also stay around a bit longer. Here you come to listen to music (oftentimes with a DJ) and to relax, to dance or to gather with friends. There is a big bar where all different kinds of drinks are being mixed, a whiskey-corner, and also your hunger can be stilled. Thanks to the warm colours and the plain and unadorned furnishings you feel real cosy here. Why not go there and try out!

AROUND ZURICH: Bond in Switzerland
AROUND ZURICH: Bond in Switzerland
In Goldfinger (1964), dir. Guy Hamilton, James Bond, played by Sean Connery, comes to Switzerland for the first time. He gets acquainted with the beauty of the country and the vileness of its inhabitants who often wear grey overalls, yellow sashes around their waists and white socks. He angries a Swiss lady, a solid performance by a Swiss sub machine gun wielding Varley Thomas. However, Bond returned to my country several times afterward, either because he liked it or because there reside a most exquisite assortment of villains. Or both. Edited to the title song of the movie by John Barry.

Labour Day in Zurich, Switzerland (Hell's Kitchen on May Day)
The movie shows a confrontation between young rioters and Zurich metro police on May 1, 2010. The movie consists entirely of photographs. Most picture sequences have been taken in series. Currently there's only a low-res version available. Real Time Mode: To provide real time viewing experience, the photo slide show displays a picture for exactly the time it took originally until the next picture was taken. Therefore, most parts of the movie show fast series of pictures (2-3 pictures per second). Few pictures remain visible for 20 - 60 seconds, study them closely or wind forwards if you get impatient. Boogg April 11th 2011. Zurich Switzerland
Böögg Bonfire during Sechseläuten. April 11th 2011 Every year, the various guilds from the city of Zürich give back to the community by holding the Sechseläuten parade. During this city-wide holiday, children and adults walk the streets dressed in costumes from back in the day: As bakers, butchers, carpenters, merchants, etc. To celebrate the coming of spring, a 3.5 m/11 ft tall snowman with an explosive personality is being torched on a huge bonfire. Symbolizing winter, the Böögg is lit up at the stroke of 6 PM (thus the name "Sechseläuten"). According to local belief, the quicker the snowman's head tumbles and/or explodes, the nicer summer will be.

Taos Hum, Brummton Phänomen, Zurich-Switzerland
Please also read my general statements at the end of this text. If you just want to hear the hum I recorded jump to position 00:42. --------- This sound is a real recorded sound of the Taos Hum - not synthesized! I call it Taos Hum because it's a common name for it and most people know what it is. Date: 22.01.2009, 01:14 am Recorded outside of the city (urban region), inside a room, door and windows closed, microphone inside the room with a cable to recording gear outside of the room, outside house temp max 2°C, humidity more than 80%, wind 0-1m/s, no rain My girlfriend hears it regularly. There are periods she doesn't hear it at all and then again she hears it many nights after another being kept awake. We tried to find the origin of the sound. We checked the heating in the whole house, did tests with winter/summer settings, switched on and off the refrigerators, closed the water pipes- ours and the ones from the neighbour, checked the environment around the house for running machines, ventilating systems etc. We let come the service technician and told him the story. He first didn't believe us until I showed him the record of the hum sound. Then he was dumbfounded, too. But we couldn't find anything that produced a similar sound. Perhaps the sounds from the environment change when traveling through the ground and then hit the house. Perhaps the bedroom is located at an interference point (?) Or perhaps the whole house acts as a resonator (?)... We don't know I usually ...

A Visit to Switzerland Zurich Geneva
A Visit to Switzerland Zurich Geneva
Switzerland (German: die Schweiz, French: Suisse, Italian: Svizzera, Romansh: Svizra), officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked alpine country in Western Europe. This small multi-lingual country, of a little over 7 million people, has four national languages, German,[3] French, Italian, and Romansh. The country is bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. It dates its independence to 1291; historically it was a confederation, and it has been a federation since 1848, with a current division into 26 cantons, six of which are sometimes referred to as "half-cantons", since they have less representation in the Council of States. Switzerland has a strong economy in finance and banking, rates highly in international economic standards despite its small size, and maintains a long and strong tradition of political and military neutrality. This background allows Switzerland to host various international organizations, such as the United Nations, which, though headquartered in New York City, has many departments in Switzerland. The safety, security, and scenic beauty of the country, for walking, hiking, and skiing, give it a strong and robust tourism sector. Confoederatio Helvetica, the country's official Latin name, means Helvetic Confederation. The use of Latin avoids having to favour one of the four national languages. The abbreviation (CH) is used for the same reason. The titles commonly used in French (Confédération suisse), Italian ...

. Fondue is a Swiss communal dish shared at the table in an earthenware pot (caquelon) over a small burner (rechaud). The term is derived from the French fondre (to melt), in the past tense fondu (melted). Diners use forks to dip bits of food (most often bread) into the warm semi-liquid sauce (commonly a cheese mix). Heat is supplied by a wicked or gel alcohol burner, or a tealight. While cheese fondue is the most widely known, there are other pot and dipping ingredients. . . . . . . Fondue Restaurant Zurich Switzerland .
